With the Facebook iOS & Android Connect License, the APM can be configured to allow a customer customers to conveniently access images from an iPhone or other Apple device. The list of supported devices may be found at the end of this article.

In order for the device to work, the APM needs to have the license for Facebook Connect enabled as well as the option to "Enable Apple iOS detection", which is configured in the Devices section of the Setup Wizard.

Steps to access an Apple Device

  1. Make sure that the device does not have the screen locked. If the screen is locked, then unlock it before connecting.
  2. Connect the device to the APM via USB cable.
  3. Once Windows identifies it (normally indicated by a sound), the APM should detect the device and allow for ordering in the normal order process.

Configuring the Kiosk

iOS 8 (released 9/17/14) requires new USB drivers. Installing the latest version of iTunes, as described below, is required to get the proper drivers installed.

  1. Visit http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download and install iTunes.
  2. Disable iTunes Helper.  
    1. On Windows 8:
      1. Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and open the Task Manager.
      2. Click on the "Startup" tab (if no tabs are visible, click on the "More Options" button)
      3. Find "iTunes Helper", right-click and choose "Disable"
      4. Close the Task Manager   
    2. On Windows 7:
      1. Open the Start Menu and type in "msconfig".
      2. Click on the "Startup" tab.
      3. Find "iTunes" and/or "iTunes Helper" and turn off the respective checkboxes to disable them.
      4. Hit "Apply" then "OK". 
  3. Reboot the kiosk.  Once restarted, quit the APM software which will automatically launch.
  4. Using a certified cable, connect an iPhone running iOS 8 to the machine.
  5. Wait while Windows indicates that it is installing a new driver.  (This may take a minute or two.)
  6. Launch the Setup Wizard and go to Kiosk Settings > Devices.  Turn on the "Enable iOS & Android Detection" checkbox.  Save & quit.
  7. Launch the APM software if it does not start automatically.

Instructions for Customers to Connect their Apple Device to the Kiosk Software

  1. Swipe to unlock the device and enter the passcode if necessary.
  2. On the Load Media screen of the kiosk, connect the device using a certified cable.
  3. Windows should identify it within a few seconds (normally indicated by a sound).
  4. On the device tap the "Trust this Computer" button which will appear.
  5. If the connection does not succeed within 60 seconds, disconnect the phone, wait 5 seconds, and then begin at Step #1 again.

Certified Cables

  • Cheap cords cables do not work well. Spend the extra and get a real cord from Apple. Or get a $19 cord from Radioshack- they now sell a $1 warranty for the cord.
  • Make sure the phone does not have a lock code. If it does, the phone must be unlocked before connecting
  • Have the phone on the main screen, do not open the photos app
  • Make sure to have the cord connected directly to the PC, some USB hubs, especially unpowered ones may interfere with the setup.

To Connect:

  1. Make sure the phone is unlocked and at main screen, but do not touch the main screen.
  2. Plug in usb cord into kiosk
  3. Plug cord into unlocked phone
  4. Listen for the usb chime
  5. Listen for the iphone chime
  6. If the Operating system on the device is on iOS 7 or later, you will be prompted on your phone to trust the computer. Press Trust on the device when prompted.
  7. Iet the system load the images from the camera roll.

The photos load slower because the software uploads all the photos before taking you to the ordering screen while on memory cards it takes you to the ordering screen then loads the photos.

March 2014 - Apple iOS 7.1 Update

The recent trouble connecting to iPhones is a result of an update released by Apple (iOS 7.1) that is currently not working with Windows XP.  As this is between Apple and Microsoft there isn’t much we can do aside from wait for Apple to sort things out with a possible patch.

Since Microsoft have now stopped supporting Windows XP (April 8th 2014) this could delay the demand for a bug fix (or prevent a fix from going out at all).

That said, we have received word of a fix involving a third party tool (we have tested and it does appear to work).  We do not support the third party tool and it is installed on the kiosks at the customer's own risk. The software is called CopyTransDriversInstaller.exe and can be found at CNET.  Simply install on the kiosk and it should correct the iPhone issue. 

The more permanent fix is to update the Operating System on the kiosk to Windows 7 or 8 which are unaffected.

September 2014 - Apple iOS 8.0 Update

We have a temporary fix for iOS (Cable) Connect on the APM for users that have updated their devices to iOS 8.
 
For now it is cumbersome, we will have more elegant one later.
  1. Install iTunes on the APM.
  2. Open Task Manager, click on Startup, Disable iTunes Helper 
  3. Reboot Machine
  4. Close Kiosk if it automatically opens.
  5. Connect an iPhone with iOS8 to the machine with Apple Cable.
  6. You should see a windows that says installing new driver.
  7. Start Kiosk.
 
This has worked on 8 test machines this morning (9/19/14), so give it a shot if you are nervous about not having a solution for iOS 8 customers.
