The following steps can be used to disable Windows 10 from downloading and installing updates automatically.

The technique is to set the Ethernet network adapter as a "metered service" which will prevent Windows from using it to download updates automatically.

Step by Step Guide

  1. Launch the Registry Editor by hitting Start and typing "regedit".  Press return to launch it.
     
  2. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\DefaultMediaCost
  3. Right-click on DefaultMediaCost and select "Permissions"

  4. In the Permissions window, click the "Advanced" button.

  5. Click the "Change" link:

  6. Type in the name of your Windows user account and click "Check Names" to validate.  Click "OK" to close the dialog.

  7.  Select the "Users" group and then check the "Allow" Full Control permission and hit "OK".

  8.  Double-click on the "Ethernet" value to edit it.

  9.  In the properties window, change the value from 1 to 2, then click "OK" to save.

  10. Close the Registry Editor.  Reboot your kiosk. 

 

WiFi Connection

If your kiosk is connected to your network via WiFi, rather than an Ethernet connection, make the change in steps #8 - #9 to the "WiFi" value instead.

 

After reboot, your Windows 10 kiosk will no longer download & install updates automatically.
